What is the thing that you do that makes you forget time and place for a while? This is what happens when I draw. It’s like an escape or a zone that I go into for a couple of hours, and when I come back to reality I am mentally refreshed. I decided to write about that, so I did a little Google-searching on the subject and came up with all kinds of articles about how making art is therapeutic. Turns out art therapy is widely practiced by health care professionals to help physically, mentally, and emotionally challenged or disabled individuals using all kinds of methods.
That is not really what I am referring to though. I love the way that doing art, whether it is drawing, painting, dancing, writing music, or whatever art form, is therapeutic in general. I don’t even think I can name all of the ways, but some biggies are self-expression, relief from stress, grief, or anxiety, and the pleasurable experience of creating something. Doing art, specifically drawing, allows me to focus on the present moment, setting all of the other cluttered thoughts aside for a while. I get lost in it, because it seems to force other distracting mental activity out of the way so that I can do the art work.
