It's at the framer! I was able to complete this project before we went to Arizona to visit my son Jake, but there wasn't time to get it to the framing shop before we left. I was really happy to have the opportunity to meet this Jake (seated in the middle obviously) while we were there. He was super nice, so I was happy to meet him and get to know another friend of my Jake's. Woot! I hope he gets a lot of fun and enjoyment with this piece. I know I had fun creating it!
Here is the completed version of the author and philosopher, Ayn Rand. I have never read her books, but she seems to have a huge following. Her heyday was the mid-1900's, and she died in 1982. A very interesting dinner guest, indeed!
Ah, the very lovely Ivanka Trump! I didn't know much about her but now I'm starting to like her. She is a successful model, business-woman, and advisor to the President. She encompasses graceful beauty and self-confidence. She's also a young mother of three, so good for her!
This MJ quote is so important and something I've been focused on learning how to do more and more lately. Especially while doing these fantasy dinner guest projects because they do take some time. I am learning to enjoy the process more than ever, which is just huge for me. So thank you, Mr. Jordan, for the inspiration.
Meet my client, Jake, who has requested a portrait of himself with his favorites: Michael Jordan, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Ayn Rand, and Ivanka Trump. WOW! What a list of varied and interesting people...I want to eavesdrop on the conversations at that dinner party! This Jake is a friend of my son's, who is also named Jake.
It's cool to watch the characters coming to life when I start the pastel work on these celebrity portraits. And thank goodness my son and husband will give me honest feedback. Have you ever looked at something you were working on for too long and you need a fresh pair of eyes to catch the mistakes? Had to tweak the zany and slightly psychotic Ace Ventura a few times until I finally got him.
So I did not know who this person was. Had to Google her. Ayn Rand, author and philosopher from the early 20th century, was someone who was a bit controversial but widely followed. Interestingly, she died in 1982 but is still selling books. And more importantly, she gets an invitation to my client's fantasy dinner party!
Yes, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective is a guest at the party! This larger than life character, played by Jim Carrey in the 1994 movie by the same name and its 1995 sequel "Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls". The outrageously silly Ace Ventura is classic Jim Carrey! Adding color should be fun on this one.
Thanks for checking it out! Have a great week.
I am excited to start a new fantasy dinner guest project! I've started working on the initial sketch of this yet untitled project. The client has invited a few of his very favorites, starting with the legendary Michael Jordan. This is going to be another fun one; lots of very interesting folks in this group. The client is another buddy of my son Jake, and he also happens to be named Jake. 😃
Have a great week and keep an eye open for updates!
My son's celebrity portrait is complete and at the framer! Jake, a.k.a. "The Client" asked me to do his portrait with his favorite celebrities. This project is named "Voices" because Jake does voice impressions and these characters are some of his best ones.
This was so much fun to create! It's challenging - not gonna lie - because you have to piece together different people (real or fictional) and make it appear as though they are all together in proportion to one another. But once it starts to come to life - I have to say...it's really funny. This is the second in a series of these, beginning with "Winners Win" that I completed in June 2017. Check it out in my previous blog posts from earlier last year.
If you followed along, I hope you enjoyed seeing this group get together with their old friend Jake. :D
Back to work on my son Jake's portrait with his favorite celebrities! This project will be titled "Voices." Jake does voice impressions and these celebs are some of his best ones. If you know him, ask him to do an impression for you!
These group portraits have been the most fun to do. I start to laugh every time I work on it and see it come to life. Who would you want to be in yours?
The lovable Chewie is a special guest a Jake's dinner party, and is making an appearance just in time for the new Star Wars movie!
This was fun because I am a Star Wars fan. Here's my trivia list about the old hobbit:
I was honored to be asked to do this commission portrait! This lovely couple are recently married and live in Phoenix, Arizona. She is a former co-worker who saw on Facebook the portrait work I have been doing and asked me to do it.
She emailed me several pictures and mentioned I would probably find some helpful photos on Facebook, and I did. It's so helpful to me to have as many reference photos as possible. I knew what Harriet looked like already but I have never met Charles. I went back through all of her Facebook photos and enjoyed getting to know these two sweet and interesting people that way. And I was glad to reconnect with my former coworker!
Thank you for the visit and have a great week!
I didn't even know who he was. I feel like I should have known that. Anyway, here's my Top Five Trivia List about the football broadcaster:
Did you know that Christopher Walden had a whole career before his classic "More Cowbell" skit on Saturday Night Live? Here's my Top Five Trivia List about the actor:
I had so much fun doing the sketchbook portraits that I thought I'd keep going...but at a slower pace! Here's an oldie but goodie - Tom Cruise from Top Gun...1986?? I mean how could it have been that long ago? Every time I see this picture, that Kenny Loggins song "Danger Zone" gets stuck in my mind. You're welcome.
More updates on Jake's celebrity portrait to come. Thanks for checking in!
I had to put The Client's portrait with his favorite celebrities on hold for the 30-day challenge, but I'm back on it. Here's a progress photo that shows the initial sketch of the group, From top left: Christopher Walken, Chewbacca, Jon Gruden, The Client, Charles Barkley, and Gollum/Smeagol. Yeah, I had to look Gruden up to see who he was. ;D I feel like I should have known that. Anyway, more progress shots to come! My goal is to wrap this one up by the end of the month.
Took a week off posting to recover from the 30 in 30 Challenge. It's called a challenge for a reason! I enjoyed it and it served the purpose of providing me with some great practice. So in addition to brushing up on my portrait-drawing skills, here are a few things I learned from doing this challenge:
No celebrity portrait collection can be complete without Elvis. Final day of the 30-day challenge. Whew! It was definitely challenging but a lot of fun and I learned a lot. I accomplished some of my goals, which is satisfying. I hope you enjoyed my parade of stars, athletes, and children. Thanks for following along with me!
Day 29 is this beauty from days gone by. So glamorous! She is probably more famous for her role in Breakfast at Tiffany's but I loved her best in My Fair Lady.
One more day in the 30-Day challenge. Whew! Thanks for the look and I hope you've been enjoying my parade of stars. :)
I've done Matthew before, so I was dismayed at how long it took to capture him. Still not happy with it, but this is a 30-day challenge, so I'm going with it. Ugh. Sometimes the likeness appears before me as I draw which makes it so much fun! I have no idea why he was more difficult. If I ever meet him, I'll have to tell him not to be so stubborn. :D
This Australian award-winning actress is also a devoted wife and mother. Day 27 of the 30-day challenge. This is quite an experience and definitely a challenge but worth it. Thanks for checking it out! See you tomorrow.
The beautiful and talented actress is day 26 in the 30-day challenge. Whew, I'm tired. Four more days...coming round the home stretch. Woo Hoo! I'll be sleeping good in October. :D
Day 25 is by request from my friend Linda Kington. Tough day studying photos of George, but that's the sacrifice we make for our friends. :)
